That's a lion hat, not a strange new hairstyle.
Ivy had run ahead of us to explore a bit and came running back yelling "a turtle! There's a turtle on the beach!" I have never seen turtles around the lake, but followed her to where she pointed to a little turtle about 2 inches long, kind of bobbing around as the waves hit it. I was sure it was a plastic toy, even after picking it up but then it moved a little. It's a baby snapping turtle
We probably should have left it there--I know a lot of well-meaning people can be unintentionally disruptive to wildlife, but it just seemed odd to find him there. It's a very small stretch of beach, and it doesn't seem the right time of year for babies. So I sent an email to one of the local nature centers. We plan to return him to the wild, but want to see if there might be a better location to take him to.
